Capitol Police Detain and Question Eugene Delgaudio over Stop Trump Shootings

Eugene Delgaudio, president of Public Advocate responded to social media posts involving his visit to Congress recently and the attempt to prevent him from speaking publicly:

DELGAUDIO STATEMENT ON DETENTION BY U.S. CAPITOL POLICE.

"I condemn the use of federal police officers to restrain or attempt to silence the voice of millions of Americans demanding that a Stop to the Trump shootings when I visited the U.S. Capitol recently."

"I appreciate and respect the dedicated law enforcement members who work daily in Washington DC on Capitol Hill. I was surprised by their reaction to my walking around the Congressional buildings to demand an end to the Trump Shootings. They detained me several times to lecture me about where to express my demands to Stop the Trump Shootings. These exchanges were frequent and disappointing as they required my being prevented from being on public streets and public sidewalks at certain places where there would be a lot of citizens, members of Congress or staff. I explained that for 40 years I have been speaking without restraint on Capitol Hill. Videos posted show the frequency of being questioned by U.S. Capitol Police.

One particular long exchange while being detained by a U.S. Capitol Police officer was about the Capitol Hill Club, a private club, being classified as a "Congressional business" or a "federal building". I am sure this was a simple confusion about the first amendment as I was on a public sidewalk and did not enter the private club. Ironically security emerged from some of the buildings and stated on camera "this is a private club".

The tone of the deployment of several U.S Capitol Police officers was to silence me or attempt to intimidate me from speaking to members of the public and members of Congress.

Nevertheless, I continued and interviewed a member of Congress, Chip Roy and spoke to many staff and visitors, " Delgaudio said.
